Lately I’ve been itching to pick up my photography hobby again, which I truly enjoy but for which I just haven’t had much time in the last few months.
So as I was strolling through Borders yesterday, I picked up two books on photography that I’ve read good things about: Galen Rowell’s Inner Game Of Outdoor Photography, and George DeWolfe’s Digital Photography Fine Print Workshop. They should keep me busy for a while…
I’m a little torn between digital and 35mm photography. I have a great Canon 35mm SLR with various lenses that I’ve used for a few years and which I love. It’s hard for any digital camera to beat the saturation and incredible colors of films like the Fuji Velvia (for an idea of what kind of images Velvia produces, check out, for example, these Rodney Lough Jr. images. They are, like so many professional outdoor photographs, mostly shot on Velvia film). The vibrant colors look amazing.
But then there is the convenience of digital photography… I guess I’ll continue doing both, depending on the situation and type of images I want to create.
I have to say though, creating professional fine prints can be a fairly complex science… especially color management of monitor, printer, and Adobe Photoshop profiles, all of which interact and have a serious impact on the final outcome…
Anyways, here’s a good NY Times article on high dynamic range photography, another fascinating area of photography that I’m going to play around with.
